The Week My Nervous System Said 'Enough' (And How I Reset It)

There was a week when my body quite literally said,
“We’re not doing this anymore.”
And the wild part?
I didn’t even realize how far I had pushed myself until it started pushing back.
When Stress Stops Being Mental… and Becomes Physical
That week at work was heavy.
Not just “busy” heavy.
Not just “a lot going on” heavy.
I mean emotionally charged, high-stakes, constantly-on-defense type of heavy.
It started with a difficult employee relations meeting—
the kind where you have to stay composed while everything in you is on alert.
Right after that?
An unemployment hearing.
And let me tell you… the energy in that room was off.
The judge was condescending. Dismissive. Biased.
And in the middle of that call, my body started reacting.
My chest tightened.
My heart started racing.
I couldn’t catch my breath.
I remember putting my head down and thinking:
“Just get through this.”
Over and over again.
I Thought It Was Over… But My Body Didn’t
The call ended.
And I told myself, “Okay, you’re fine.”
But my body didn’t agree.
I couldn’t eat.
I was pacing.
I couldn’t settle.
And then I went right into another high-emotion meeting.
No break.
No reset.
Just straight back into pressure.
By the time I got home, I was drained in a way I couldn’t explain.
And that’s when the symptoms got… weird.
The Part Nobody Talks About
My feet started itching.
Then my arms.
My knees.
My elbows.
Random. Constant. Uncomfortable.
I wasn’t sleeping.
I was exhausted but wired.
Running on coffee and energy drinks.
And no matter what I did…
I could not calm down.
I Thought It Was My Products… But It Was My Nervous System
I went into problem-solving mode.
Called the doctor.
Switched everything to sensitive products.
Body wash, detergent, skincare everything.
Still itching.
Still anxious.
Still not sleeping.
That’s when I realized:
This wasn’t external.
This was internal.
What Was Actually Happening
After doing some research (without spiraling on Google),
I realized something that changed everything:
I wasn’t just “stressed.”
My body was in fight-or-flight mode… constantly.
And the panic attacks?
They weren’t showing up how I expected.
They were showing up as:
• itching
• restlessness
• racing thoughts
• exhaustion with no rest
My body wasn’t malfunctioning. It was trying to protect me.
The Reset: What Actually Helped Me
I didn’t fix this overnight.
But I started layering things that helped my body feel safe again.
1. I Grounded Myself Spiritually First
Before anything else, I prayed.
Not perfectly. Not polished.
Some days it was structured.
Some days it was just:
“Jesus… Jesus… Jesus…”
I reminded myself:
• I am safe
• God is with me
• I have what I need to handle this
And that alone started to soften the intensity.
2. I Stopped Guessing and Started Observing
Instead of panicking about symptoms, I asked:
“What is my body trying to say?”
That shift alone changed everything.
3. I Gave My Nervous System Interrupts
When I felt an attack coming on, I didn’t just sit in it.
I disrupted it.
• Sour candy (yes, Jolly Ranchers)
• Cold water (ice cold)
• Breathing techniques
It wasn’t about eliminating anxiety instantly.
It was about breaking the cycle.
4. I Supported My Body (Not Just My Mind)
I added things that actually helped regulate me physically:
• L-theanine (for calming)
• Magnesium at night
• Lemon balm tea (because chamomile wasn’t for me)
And I noticed a difference almost immediately.
5. I Built a Routine That Felt Safe
This is where everything started to shift.
I stopped treating my routines like tasks…
and started treating them like support systems.
My Morning Reset
My mornings became intentional.
• Soft lighting
• Comfy robe + house shoes
• Hot coffee
• Quiet time with God
And then I started doing something that changed everything:
I asked God to prepare me.
Not just “have a good day.”
But specifically:
• Shoes of patience
• Jacket of kindness
• Cloak of courage
• Hat of discernment
• Gloves of power
That prayer didn’t just comfort me.
It made me feel equipped.
My Night Routine (Where the Healing Happened)
At night, I started signaling to my body:
“We’re safe now. You can rest.”
• Magnesium (pill or drink)
• Tart cherry + calming blends
• Warm showers with ambient lighting
• Diffusers
No harsh lights. No rushing. Just a slow landing.
The Real Shift
What changed everything for me wasn’t just the products.
It wasn’t just the supplements.
It wasn’t even just the routine.
It was the moment I stopped asking, “How do I make this stop?”
…and started asking, “What does my body actually need right now?”
Because up until that point, I was still trying to push through.
Still trying to perform.
Still trying to function like nothing was happening.
But my body wasn’t asking me to push.
It was asking me to participate differently in my own life.
I had to get honest about what I needed to feel safe again.
Not productive.
Not impressive.
Not “back to normal.”
Safe.
Calm.
Regulated.
Supported.
So I started paying attention.
I started noticing:
• what made me feel grounded
• what made me feel rushed
• what made my body soften
• and what made it tense up
And instead of ignoring those signals…
I started responding to them.
I didn’t overhaul my entire life overnight.
I made small, intentional adjustments:
• adding things that calmed me
• removing things that overstimulated me
• creating moments where I could actually breathe
And over time, those small decisions started to add up.
That’s when I realized something important:
This wasn’t just about getting through a stressful week.
This was about learning how to support the version of me I say I want to be.
The version of me that is:
• calm under pressure
• emotionally steady
• well-rested
• and not constantly in survival mode
And that shift?
That’s what changed everything.
Because healing didn’t come from one big solution.
It came from a series of small, intentional choices
that told my body:
“You’re safe now.”
Final Thought
Here’s the truth:
I didn’t burn out because I was weak.
I burned out because I didn’t pause.
My nervous system didn’t fail me.
It stepped in when I wouldn’t.
Your body will always tell you the truth.
Even when your mind tries to push through.
And sometimes?
The glow-up isn’t about doing more.
It’s about learning how to come back to yourself.
